A plant called Kratom has become popular in the drug rehab world and in the fight against America’s growing heroin addiction. A tropical tree native to southeast Asia, it has leaves that have been shown to contain psychotropic effects. Although the Drug Enforcement Administration is hard at work on it, Kratom is not currently illegal in the United States and is available for purchase online and in some head shops. In addition to opioid-based addictions requiring heroin treatment and drug rehab which are what primarily drew attention to the plant, it has also become popular among people who suffer from anxiety or depression as it is able to alleviate anxious thoughts and elevate mood. Those who suffer from various forms of chronic pain take it for its pain-relieving properties that come without the drowsy or dangerous side effects and the high cost of pharmaceuticals. Some people are even using it for the simple purpose of replacing their morning coffee, thereby eliminating caffeine from their diet.

Opioid Withdrawals Eased With Use of Kratom

Mitragyna speciosa is the scientific name for this plant. It is a tropical evergreen belonging to the coffee family. It has been used in traditional native medicines since the 1800s in areas like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. The particular chemical compounds possessed by this plant give it opioid properties and stimulant-like, euphoric effects. In these traditional uses, Kratom has been used to help or heal everything from relieving musculoskeletal pain and increasing energy and sex drive, to coughs, intestinal infections and diarrhea. Depending on the strain and amount, it can be used to promote or stave off sleepiness. In Thailand, Kratom is traditionally given when receiving guests into one’s home.

Not all Kratom strains are alike. Some have euphoric and stimulating effects, others are calming and offer relief from pain. It is also possible to take different strains of different veins of Kratom and blend them into something completely different for a more personalized range of effects. Kratom types are usually divided into one of three categories. Red vein, green vein, and white vein. The divisions are named for the literal color of the stems and veins that run through the leaf itself which is what determines the physical and psychological effects each particular leaf will have. The color determines the effects of the leaf because the color is indicative of the different chemical compositions contained within. The stem and veins of the leaf are removed through the grinding process.

Red Vein Kratom

As explained, these leaves will have red stems and veins. The red vein kratom is currently the best selling Kratom on the market and the one most commonly used for drug rehab. It provides a calming effect and promotes feelings of well-being, optimism, and general peace of mind. Red vein Kratom is also excellent when used as a sleep inducer, especially in people who suffer from insomnia. It relaxes the body and relieves pain, which has caused many people to switch over from their traditional pharmaceuticals. The strongest of red Kratom extracts are what drug rehab programs use to prevent the symptoms of withdrawal from opioids that most addicts experience during heroin treatment.

White Vein Kratom

The white vein of Kratom enjoys its popularity as a stimulant and a mood enhancer. Many people are even ditching their morning coffee in favor of white Kratom and go about their day enjoying its benefits of concentration, alertness, and cheerfulness. Those who take this regularly have reported that they experience increased stamina, motivation, and concentration as well. It is not advised to take white Kratom too late in the day as its users may experience restless sleep. It is not uncommon for people to mix the red and white in order to achieve a more balanced feeling in energy. Some of the more popular types of white vein Kratom include Pontianak White Horn, White Vein Sumatra, and Borneo White.

Green Vein Kratom

This third vein of kratom falls somewhere in between the red vein and the white vein. Users report that it helps them “get into the flow” of their day and improves their focus and alertness. The green strain acts more subtly and can be used as an effective mild pain reliever without any of the sedative-type effects that are experienced by users of the red vein. Just like the other two veins, green can be mixed with red and/or white veins to produce a proprietary blend that is unique to the user. This is most often done to round out the excessive anesthetic feeling of the red and the excessive stimulation of the white. The green vein is an excellent choice for anyone who suffers from social anxiety as it is able to eliminate anxiety-inducing thoughts and instill a feeling of carefree bliss. As it is reported to make you more talkative, friendly, and cheerful the green strain is most widely used for being out and about. Users describe it as “making you comfortable in your own skin.”

While the government may still be on the fence about Kratom, many people who need heroin treatment and are in drug rehab are switching over to Kratom and seeing amazing success.
