The last thing on an addict’s mind while they are in the depths of addiction is self-care. Once an individual is ready to seek help and checks into a center, they are, more often than not, malnourished. Not only have they not actively kept up with proper nutrition, but in many cases, their body has also been ravaged by the alcohol or drug, which impacts the body’s ability to absorb nutrition from food.  When entering a recovery program, many issues must be addressed, including proper, healing nutrition.

First Steps

Begin a regular and consistent eating program. Chances are, a normal routine of eating at least three times per day was not adhered to prior to treatment. Getting the body used to having healthful food regularly in it is will start helping the body get used to breaking down the food and absorbing nutrients. Trying to establish a routine of three meals per day, or interval eating at three to four hours each day, can help the system immensely get back into rhythm. This will allow the body to trigger natural physiological signals once again that will make it is easier to determine when our body is full and nourished or when it is hungry and ready for nutrition.

The Right Balance

Not only is eating important and getting back into a routine essential, but making sure the food you eat is wholesome and healthful is also crucial. Balancing your meals with the appropriate ratios of nutrients will help your body recover and heal. Your daily mealsshould consist of carbohydrates, a bit of fiber to keep your system working, and of course, very high-quality proteins.

Once your body is used to regular meals and is getting the adequate nutrients that you need to heal, it is going to tell you what it needs. It is important to listen to your body. When you are starting to feel full, slow down and maybe end your eating session so you don’t overeat. If you are very hungry, it has been too late for food for your body. Regular eating times will ensure that you get the food into your system before excess hunger kicks in, keeping you going like a well-oiled machine.

  • I have remained sober and it is because of DP. DP is the best place there is, hands down. I keep everyone there in my prayers, and I encourage everyone there to take what they are practicing and do it in their lives, after.

  • Discovery Place means the world to me. They showed me the tools that I’ve tried to use everyday in my life to think less often of myself, and more frequently of others. I am learning to lend a hand when I am able and to have a honest and humble relationship with God and the people around me. Not only am I clean and sober, but also I am happy and fulfilled.

  • When I got to Discovery Place my whole life was in shambles, but I didn’t know it. I spent 6 months in their programs, participating in all three phases, and was met with kindness and love all along the way. It is unbelievable to me, where I am now relative to where I was when I arrived at DP.
