Every day countless people struggle to rise above their addiction to alcohol. Also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD), this condition is marked by an unhealthy and compulsive consumption of alcohol. Alcohol addiction disrupts every facet of peoples’ lives, leading to both physical and emotional stress.

Because of this, it is crucial that individuals seek help as soon as possible. No matter what stage of alcohol addiction a person is in, our men’s alcohol rehab in Nashville, Tennessee can help.

What is Alcoholism?

The term alcoholism refers to a medical disorder that is defined by an uncontrollable consumption of alcohol. Oftentimes, those battling alcohol addiction are aware of the negative toll alcohol is taking on their life. However, they are unable to stop their drinking as the hold alcohol has on them has become too strong.

Unfortunately, cognitive changes and damage are likely to ensue from alcohol addiction. As a result, alcoholism often leads to a host of mental repercussions. Thankfully, Discovery Place’s alcohol rehab in Nashville, Tennessee is available and our caring staff is determined to instill lasting sobriety in each of our valued guests.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholism

For the most successful outcomes, alcohol addiction should be treated as soon as it is identified. To make this process easier and more accurate, it is essential to know the indicators and symptoms associated with alcoholism. These include:

  • Spending the majority of your time seeking and drinking alcohol as well as recovering from its side effects
  • Alcohol cravings
  • Failing to fulfill personal and professional responsibilities due to alcohol consumption
  • Increasing the amount and frequency of alcohol consumption
  • Being unable to quit drinking despite multiple attempts
  • Driving while drunk
  • Continuing to drink despite seeing the negative consequences it has on your relationships and overall quality of life
  • Developing an increased tolerance to alcohol
  • Encountering withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop drinking
  • Consuming alcohol over engaging in once enjoyed activities

Alcohol Use vs Misuse

Alcohol use and alcohol misuse are often used interchangeably. However, the 2 terms are different, though they can be difficult to differentiate between. In the end, the distinction between these degrees of alcohol consumption comes down to the frequency and amount a person drinks on a daily basis. For men, alcohol misuse means consistently having 2 or more drinks every day. On the other hand, alcohol abuse in men means having 5 or more alcoholic drinks on a daily basis.

Additionally, a person struggling with alcohol abuse would reveal 2 or more symptoms of alcoholism within a 1-year period. If you are uncertain about whether or not you have a drinking problem, please contact Discovery Place in Nashville, Tennessee for an assessment.

Alcohol Abuse Statistics in Tennessee

Despite Tennessee’s charming countryside and widely celebrated music, the state is still subject to the harsh impacts of alcohol addiction. As a matter of fact, the most commonly misused substance in Tennessee is alcohol. That being the case, approximately 5% of the state’s residents drink an unhealthy amount.

Sadly, statistics reveal this alcohol misuse to be starting from an early age. For example, in 2018 the average age that those in Tennessee started consuming alcohol was only 14. Furthermore, over 20% of the state’s high schoolers have admitted to binge drinking. Given this prevalence of drinking, it is upsetting, yet not surprising, that Tennessee saw over 7,000 crashes involving drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol in 2020. Tragically, these reckless and preventable collisions caused over 4,600 injuries and 435 deaths.

It also provides guests with volunteer opportunities and job placement assistance.
