How to Pack for Treatment

A decision to enter a rehabilitation program and take the first crucial step in getting solid help and working towards your sobriety and recovery is something to be proud of and commended. This may be the start of a long life lived sober. If you are new to the whole process, the first thing that you will need to do is pack, and figuring out what to pack may not be as easy as it seems. Many programs have their own regulations or recommendations as to how to move forward with packing effectively. If the treatment program you are entering doesn’t provide any specifications, here are a couple of tips to help you get yourself ready.

It is always a good idea to have some cash on hand no matter where you are, and a treatment program is no different. You don’t need a lot; a smaller amount is feasible. You should always have your insurance cards when applicable. Bring your photo identification, and if you have credit cards, at least one will work.

Additionally, there are some other items that can prove to be quite helpful including:

  • Notebook to write in during your recovery
  • Leisure items, such as:
    • A good book or two
    • Music
    • Movies or DVDs
  • Prescription medications
  • Personal items of loved ones, such as photos or stuffed animals
  • A playlist of music to enjoy

How to Pack for Treatment

The time you are in a rehabilitation program should be comfortable and soothing. You should be completely focused on getting healthy, and so packing clothing that will work for the climate you are in is key. If it is cool, a comfortable sweater or hoodie will work, or lighter clothes for the warmer weather. If you are unsure how the weather will be, packing clothing that can be layered is helpful because that way you can add when you are feeling a bit chilly and reduce when you are warm. If you enjoy outdoor activities or like to exercise, don’t forget your exercise clothes and tennis shoes.

What Not To Pack,

While you are in rehabilitation, you are going to be away from those triggers and negative aspects of life that have plagued you. Do not bring any with you. Absolutely no alcohol or illegal drugs. Additionally, keep any of your jewelry and electronics that have access to the internet at home. The only things you are to focus on is yourself and your recovery; nothing that can distract you from these things will be accepted in most facilities and you wouldn’t want anything that could undermine the work you are going to engage in to occur. Give yourself the very best shot at wellness and sobriety.
