Alcohol is widely consumed throughout the world, with over two billion people regularly drinking the beverage. In the U.S., it is the most commonly used substance, so the risk of abuse is high. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) did a survey in 2015, which found that over 86% of adults, those 18 years or older, have had tried alcohol, with 56% consuming an alcoholic beverage within the past month. 26.9% of these adults admitted that they engaged in binge drinking recently. This is a significant amount of the population.

Binge drinking is defined as drinking in excess and, in some circumstances, it can result in alcohol poisoning. When one drinks to excess, similar to any other abused substance, they risk the chance of death. If you or a loved one has over-indulged in alcohol, here are some ways to recognize poisoning and tips on what to do.

Symptoms

What-is-Alcohol-Poisoning-And-How-Do-You-Treat-It

Technically, having more than four drinks in one sitting is considered binge drinking for women. For men, the number is only a bit higher, at 5 drinks in a sitting. The reason for the difference is due to the way men and women metabolize alcohol. When understanding what a “drink” is, the CDC says 12 ounces of beer, 8 ounces of malt liquor, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits are each considered one drink.

When one overdoes it, the symptoms of overdose can include:

  • Irregular breathing patterns
  • Vomiting consciously or unconsciously
  • Cold and damp skin that could have a blueish tone
  • Blacked out

If you are in a situation where someone you know is showing any of these symptoms, you need to be proactive. Their condition could worsen with time, and the need for appropriate medical attention is important in order to ensure that the situation does not become catastrophic.

Treating Alcohol Poisoning

Always seek medical attention immediately by calling 911. While you are waiting for the ambulance and medics to arrive, there is still more you can do. Prop the individual up on their side, which helps keep their airways open. If they do end up vomiting unconsciously, this lessens the risk of suffocation. In severe cases, medics may need to invasively remove all alcohol from the stomach.
