Do you feel like you may have a drug or alcohol issue? A detox facility in Tennessee may be able to help. These days one in ten people over the age of twelve are dealing with a drug or alcohol problem. However, only an infinitesimal amount of addicts actually look for treatment to overcome their addiction.

A detox facility can be the first step in your journey to recovery.

Detox programs can medically help the addict to manage any withdrawal issues. Post-detox, it is easier for the person to move into an inpatient or outpatient program.

Are you serious about recovery? Here’s what you need to realize about entering a detox facility and what it is that you can anticipate. Overcoming addiction is difficult. Yet, with the right treatment, you can overcome your addiction issues.

Timeline

One of the most important questions patients have is what is the timeline for detoxing. The easy answer is that the timeline for detoxing is dependent on the addict’s problem – the type and level of addiction that the patient is suffering from.

Some drugs take longer to exit your system than other kinds. Because of this, with certain drugs, the detox process may be longer and initial withdrawal may harder. Detox usually takes anywhere between only a few days and about at least one week.

Physical Withdrawal

As you detox, you can expect to feel several physical symptoms because of withdrawal. Symptoms can include:

  • Muscle strain
  • Tremors
  • Nausea and sweating
  • Heart palpitations and labored breathing
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

These symptoms happen for the first few days but gradually lessen over time.

Emotional Withdrawal

What about your emotional wellbeing? Emotional withdrawal symptoms can occur during the first few days of detox. Symptoms include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleeplessness or nightmares
  • Irritability
  • Disorientation
  • Mood swings

Because these emotions and stressors were previously self-medicates with a controlled substance, the patient now needs to deal with these hard emotional states on their own. Within a detox center, a therapist and doctors can help by offering guidance and support.

Access to a Medical Help

As stated above, during detox, you will have access to professional doctors and nurses to help to guide you. They also have the responsibility to ensure that the detox procedure is as safe and comfortable as possible.  They may even prescribe medication to help ease the symptoms of withdrawal.

Therapy is Offered

As well as a medical doctor, patients also gain access to a therapist. Detox can also be incredibly hard on the mental health of a patient. Having a therapist can assist with guidance and support.

Prescription Medication

For some addicts, quitting cold turkey is too hard, even with a detox center’s support. Withdrawal can be so intense that addicts continue to use. In some instances, withdrawal can even put your life at risk.

Because of this, doctors sometimes choose to prescribe medication, which assists to ease withdrawal symptoms.

Detoxing from Prescription Drugs

At the end of a detox program, you may require time to detox from the prescription drugs that have been assisting you in your journey. Fortunately, this type of detoxing is much simpler than previous drug or alcohol issues with much fewer withdrawal symptoms.

Lessened Cravings

Nearing the end of detox, you may realize that your cravings have been lessened. You will feel a sense of calm and have the readiness to move forward into an inpatient or outpatient treatment program.

Transitioning to an Inpatient Treatment Program

After detox is completed, many people move into an inpatient treatment program for a sober living environment with other patients. Here, you move ever further towards sobriety with the support of in-house staff and doctors. There is also support from other patients. Inpatient treatment can be the foremost way to stay committed to sobriety.

Outpatient Treatment Facilities

However, some patients choose an outpatient treatment to help them after detox. This can offer a low-priced and minimal maintenance alternative. Patients live their daily life while continuing treatment. They also engage with doctors and therapists to ensure they are staying committed.
